Our writable surface options are one of our most requested items to date and for good reason! They allow for learners to compose their notes and share them in a collaborative environment with peers and educators. When combined with a foldable table like our COLLABORATIVE COLLECTIVE ™ Foldable Table or in the form of the CLOUDIE™ Foldable table , the possibilities are endless in student learning for group presentation and ideation. To best maintain the writable surface, here are a few recommendations we have for cleaning and using our writable desks.
Before you start (types of markers, erasers)
When considering the types of markers to use in the classroom, be sure to use non-permanent, xylene-free (non-toxic), dry erase markers. Dry erase markers come in a variety of colors and thicknesses, so it’s best to consider what you are using your writable surfaces for. For example, in a collaborative environment, thicker markers in vibrant colors allow for learners to present their ideas to the class at a glance, when paired with a foldable desk solution. Thinner markers are great for individual study, as they provide more writing space for the learner (or educator) to compose their notes for tasks or writing compositions.
Additionally, we find that colored markers have a faster drying time and are hence easier to clean after use. When using black markers, we suggest implementing the “5 second rule” before wiping, as the ink can still be wet, to minimise any ink smears, and may become difficult to clean with a dry cloth. In this instance, just use a damp cloth to wipe the surface.
During use
When cleaning the desks in between activities or lessons, ensure that you are using a clean and dry cloth or whiteboard eraser to remove the ink. Be sure that the ink is dry before wiping it off as to ensure that any wet ink from the marker does not smudge the surface. If there is any residue left on the surface however, do not fret! The writable surface can be cleaned with a damp cloth to remove any left over residue.
End of day cleaning
For any excess ink that has remained on the writable surface at the end of the day, simply use a damp cloth to remove any smudges. It is important to just use water to dampen the cloth as any chemicals containing acetone, bleach, methylated spirits or mineral turpentine will damage the surface for future usage.
