After a combined 50+ years in education and a decade of design, we’ve witnessed firsthand how the physical environment shapes the educational experience. While facilitators focus on curriculum and methodology, designers grapple with a different, yet equal, question: how can the environment itself become a partner in the learning process?

In 2021-2022, about 19% of students ages 12-18 reported being bullied during school (National Center for Education Statistics, 2022).

Design shapes our autonomy in profound ways. Every interface, space, and system we interact with either expands or constrains our choices, often invisibly.

How many of you have built a fort? A fort outside? Or have paused to hear the birds while you walk? Have been fortunate to see and hear – experience the ocean? How many of you have ripped grass from the ground, dug for worms, have searched for buried treasure or more?
